Confessions of a former Neo-Con, A Constitutional Libertarian Manifesto!

Yes I admit it, I was a Neo-Conservative for many years. I usually supported most of the GOP platform which included government intervention in the economy through corporate welfare and a blind adherence to an ever growing military presence in the world expanding NATO and increasing the military budget without ever questioning why we designated ourselves as policeman of the world. I also believed wholeheartedly in the federal government’s war on drugs and individual state sovereignty must yield to the federal government in many areas.

I also got caught up in the European view of the political spectrum with the Fascism, National Socialism on the extreme right, Marxism, Communism, and Socialism on the extreme left with Liberal Western Democracy somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.  I respected the founders but in many cases I believed the constitution they carefully crafted fell short. I bought into the lie of a “living Constitution” which could be interpreted outside of original intent of the founders to try to remedy perceived modern day ills.

I have come over the past few years reject wholeheartedly the Neo-Conservative philosophy. I have come to believe this philosophy which has come to infect many conservatives and a huge part of the Republican Party is as alien to American political thought as Progressive movement is. The adoption of this philosophy by the GOP has been so destructive and has made most recent presidential elections the choice between the lessors of two evils.  The frustration of not having a clear choice in political ideals and the Hypocrisy of both major parties has been astounding. The political atmosphere has caused the American people to be apathetic and thus helped Progressives to achieve most of their goals to undermine our republic.

The question everyone must ask is: CAN MEN GOVERN THEMSELVES?  The classical American view of the political spectrum reflects this with on one side the complete absence of government on one extreme side (Anarchy) and on the other extreme all of the “isms” that mankind has endured in the last century (All the Totalitarian forms of government:  Fascism, National Socialism, Marxism, & Communism). Somewhere much closer to the absence of government than to Totalitarianism is the constitutional republic that our founding fathers set up.

The individual states formed the federal Government not the other way around. The constitution was intended to be taken as a formula for the federal government. The states have the primary sovereignty and only granted the federal government only those enumerated powers listed in the constitution. The progressives have indoctrinated the public over the last hundred years in the idea of a “Living Constitution” to be interpreted by the will of congress, Current federal courts (Yes including the Supreme Court) , or even popular sentiment at a particular point in time, if this was the original intent the founders they would have never crafted a constitution. The central government under the constitution is to be “Federal” NOT a “National” government.

I realize that questions of original intent will arise now and again in the courts. The courtsshould rely on the transcripts of the individual states ratifying conventions and the Federalist papers to interpret original intent. The founders provided two methods of changing the constitution the progressives have gone around the constitution by promoting it as a “Living Document” to increase the Federal Governments power that they would never have achieved by the amendment process.

Senator Robert Taft (1889-1953)

The conservative moment should go back to its traditional roots as presented by the late Senator Howard Taft. His believed in individual liberty, Federalism and a non-interventionist foreign policy. He believed in a strong defense but he abhorred American designating itself the world’s policeman. His views on American foreign policy were that of John Quincy Adams who stated:

“ [America] goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own. She will commend the general cause by the countenance of her voice, and the benignant sympathy of her example. She well knows that by once enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication, in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy, and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom.”

Our ever increasing military intervention over the last few decades are draining our

John Quincy Adams

treasury and over extending our military forces. The most blatant examples were in Bosnia, Libya, Haiti, in which we have had no national interest at all. Even in Afghanistan and Iraq I have come to the conclusion I was wrong by following the neo-con program of nation building which has proven itself to be a utter failure.

The neo-cons in the GOP have supported in some cases big government programs as bad as the progressives have. Cases in point are “No Child Left Behind” and the unsustainable Medicare (Part D) Prescription program.. The Federal government has no Constitutional role in education and its interference is evident as seen in the declining test scores and standards since the Department of Education was established in the 1970’s.

Every GOP president since Herbert Hoover has increased the size and scope of the Federal Government with the possible exception of Ronald Reagan, remember the overreaching EPA was even started by Richard Nixon.

Our founding fathers answered the question: CAN MEN GOVERN THEMSELVES?

Their answer was a resounding YES! Our founders were children of the enlightenment in which they believed that since all men are endowed with natural rights that are not granted from a monarch or state; neither could rights be granted by them. These rights come directly from the creator and cannot be taken away and the only purpose in government was to insure the protection of these rights. The “Classical” liberal/ constitutional Libertarian philosophy of limited government which recognizes these rights and is what our republic was founded on.

Just my Opinion D.B.

Thomas Jefferson

“What exactly do you know about Thomas Jefferson?” That simple question started me on a quest. It was the summer of 2011, and Congress was in the midst of the debt ceiling debate. I asked that question of my son who had recently completed the 8th grade. We were discussing the debate, and I was amazed by some of the things he did not understand. I began to quiz him about the people and the documents associated with the founding of our country, and my amazement grew further still. I was particularly surprised because he is an avid follower of all things political. He also received history-related awards in the 5th and the 8th grades when the history of our country is a component of the social studies curriculum. His answer to my question? Thomas Jefferson signed the Declaration of Independence, he was the third president, and he owned slaves. Upon further questioning I decided he knew far less about Jefferson than I expected. Later that day I decided to ask my other children what they knew about Jefferson. My middle child, who had just completed the 6th grade, told me that there was no focus on any individual founder when she was in fifth grade. She could have learned about Jefferson if he was the topic of her independent study project for social studies, but she chose to study the Sugar Act instead. She could, however, recite a dearth of extraneous information about Jefferson which she read in book I bought for her about the American Revolution. My youngest child, who had just finished 2nd grade, responded to my question by asking, “Isn’t he the guy with the kite?” READ MORE »

The Mighty Eighth! – A historical reflection on the 8th Army Air Force in World War II.

As we celebrate with our families this thanksgiving, let us remember the generation that may have left an empty chair at our family’s table. The greatest generation is leaving us and I wanted to write a story to remember a small part of that generation that was mighty in its deeds and holds one of the highest places in the pantheon of the history of this nations military forces.

Growing up, I have always felt a deep sense of gratitude in my heart for the men of the 8th Army Air Force that served so bravely in the European theatre during World War II. I learned of their heroism from movies made after the war as well as from the TV series of the sixties, “Twelve O’clock High”.  Growing older I have read the actual history behind the myth and it has served to increase my admiration even more. They were not “supermen” of my childhood but were human with all of the frailties we all possess. But they were able to transcend them.

The 8th Air Force was activated in SavannahGeorgiaon 28 January 1942 at the Chatham Armory. It consisted of two planes and a few dozen airmen under Brigadier General Ira C Eaker. He would eventually move his HQ to the United Kingdomin February. The first bombing mission of the eighth wasn’t until July 4th 1942 when six American aircrews borrowed 6 Royal Air force (RAF) Boston Bombers painted with US markings. The planes went out for a low level bombing run overHolland but only three came back. This was to be a prophetic sign of things to come for the eighth. Two days earlier the first Boeing B-17 arrived that would be the backbone of the eighth’s future. READ MORE »

We are the One Percent!

The Marxists, Anarchists & National Socialists that support the “Occupy Wall Street” protests voice the opinion that they are part of the 99% of citizens against the 1% of the capitalist oligarchs that are supposedly oppressing the masses. If you were to view it from a historical perspective encompassing the whole of human history, I would say they have it completely backwards.  We are the one percent.

In November 2011 we are well on the road to serfdom, (A phrase I respectfully borrow from the title of the famous work by the Austrian economist and philosopher Friedrich von Hayek) in which these supposedly educated elites are participating in the destruction of their own freedoms. Unbeknownst to them if they had their way they would be the last generation of Americans to know freedom. Their calls for redistribution of wealth, class warfare, and unlimited entitlements are an echo of past history of the final troves of past republics.

The continuation of this trend can only lead to despotism of either a soft or hard variety and the inevitable loss of individual rights not only economic but political ones as well.

How are we the one percent? Look at how many people have walked the face of the earth (estimated at around 120 billion) and have lived in societies that had political and economic freedom.  For most of civilization the 99% of the populace lived in societies where life was considered very cheap and the fruits of your toil was not your own.  Most people lived in a world of violence and disease.  Their short lives more often than not, existed in a place where their very flesh belonged to someone else.

We live in a Republic, not a Democracy as most liberal academics and commentators keep touting.  Nations that evolved into republics have always maintained the greatest amount of freedom forthe individual and provided the most prosperous lifestyle to the majority of its citizens.  Unfortunately the state of freedom in mankind’s history is short lived and republican forms of government eventually consume themselves.  The first republics to come on the scene rose from the classical Greco-Roman world.   The longest lasting republic of these was the Roman Republic.  It was the first republic to encompass more than one city or tribe of people.  Even this great experiment in representative government eventually failed because it could not sustain unity. The All American Boy of summer: Gil Hodges and My Fathers Love of the Brooklyn Dodgers and his Son’s Love for the Miracle New York Mets.

In April 1943, my father left for the army from his small row house in Paterson, NJ where he lived and helped support his widowed mother and sister at the age of 34,m to serve in the Second World War. Before he left, my grandmother made a promise to him that she would follow his favorite baseball team for him while he was overseas. That team was the Brooklyn Dodgers, or as their loyal fans would affectionately call them, “Dem Bums.” My grandmother knew nothing about baseball at the time, but out of love for her son, she became a loyal Brooklyn fan. By the time my father came home in October 1945, she knew in detail about every player and would never forget to tune into a game that was broadcast on the radio. She remained a loyal Dodger fan until her death in 1950.

In the same year as my father left for war, a very young Indiana boy of 19 was recruited right out of St Joseph’s College and signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but he played only one game that year at third base and struck out twice. Just as the war called my father, it came calling for young Gil who had been in the Marine ROTC program at St Joseph’s. He was shipped off to the Pacific with the U.S. Navy where he was involved in the battles Tinian and Okinawa. Even though he was young, he was a hero and was awarded the Bronze Star before leaving service in 1946. READ MORE »

Stephanie Maier-My Memories of 9-11 with President Bush

Original story on Pajamas Media, Used with permission

In 2001, I was a Regional Director for the Republican Party of Florida, responsible for grassroots activities in ten key Republican counties from Manatee down to Collier. A regular part of my job included attending Presidential visits to my region and providing staff support by doing whatever was needed, from site prep to corralling guests, media and by-standers into some kind of organized chaos.

Presidential visits were always exciting, and this was no exception. But working for this President was slightly different for me, because it was my first experience working on a Presidential campaign, and I had the opportunity to see the Bush family up close and personal on several occasions. I had come to believe in George W. Bush the man and his character. On election night, I saw the major networks prematurely call the election for Al Gore inFloridaand I knew it was wrong. Key counties in my region hadn’t finished even 25% reporting, and if the Republican votes came in the way I’d predicted, Gore couldn’t win. READ MORE »

A university is not a political party, and an education is not an indoctrination.

-David Horowitz

It has been 42 years since the Woodstock Concert, the iconic cultural peak of the rebellious sixties generation. I remember as young boy watching television and hearing that the NY State Thruway had to be closed during those three August days in 1969 and wishing I was old enough to attend since many of my rock and roll heroes were playing there. President Obama as FDR

“We are spending more money than we have ever spent before and it does   not work. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. We have never made good on our promises. I say after eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started and an enormous debt to boot.”   -Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Treasury Secretary under FDR, testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee, May 1939.

As the economic data for the first two quarters of this year are being digested, almost everyone inWashingtonnow believes that President Obama’s economic stimulus package, which was supposed to keep the unemployment rate under 8.5 percent, is a dismal failure. READ MORE »

An Historical Refection

President Grover Cleveland is not remembered by most Americans and his legacy I would venture today is rarely if taught at all in American public schools.  He was the first Democratic president since James Buchannan and the start of the CivilWar. He was the only president to serve two non consecutive terms. (He was the 22nd president elected in 1884 & 24th President elected in 1892). READ MORE »
